February 2, 2012

Amazingly warm weather in Ohio!  We hit 62 degrees this week!  Lots of mud, but sun and warmer weather we can handle!  Everyone is doing well!  We had our first show of 2012 two weeks ago.  Arena Drive Trial in Sullivan, Ohio.  We took 5 horses, Mandolyn RVRW moved up to preliminary with Mike Woodward.  The pair won their dressage and cones, however a slip up in hazards took them to 2nd place overall.

Marquis MJW and Jacque Woodward took participated in their first ADT, taking 4th overall in the training level single pony division.  This was the largest class with 10 entries!

Miniature horses, Belle and Tucker had new drivers as the weather turned bad and Gwen and Johnathan were not able to come up to compete.  Duane Stutzman took Belle to WIN the VSE division (Very Small Equine) and Liz Fetzer drover her first horse ever, with Tucker and took 5th in the same division!

A student of ours, Janay Fetzer, came along with us and took her miniature horse, Houdini, and the pair earned 4th in the VSE division, and WON the youth division!

A great start for 2012!  Also, Woodward Performance Haflingers is now on Facebook!  Just search for us!!!

Dec 30, 2011  Wishing everyone a wonderful new year!  May 2012 be filled with wonderful Haflinger horses and great friends!

We would like to welcome 2 new additions to the farm and say goodbye to an old friend.

Our wonderful Haflinger Newsline of Hylite passed away Dec 24, 2011.  He was an amazing hitch horse, who won so many classes we can't even count.  He taught a lot of people how to drive and show, including myself.  He took me to my first Haflinger Show, and also gave me my first Draft women's cart class trophy at the Ohio State Fair.  Retired from showing after getting cataracts in his eyes, News had a wonderful retirement on our 80 acres, taking care of the young foals, and watching over his herd of mares.

Our 2 new additions are miniature horses, 'Ginger' and 'Little Bit'.  Both are Class 'A' Miniature horses.  We really enjoy the miniature horses for the kids to play with and think that 2012 will be filled with lots of costume classes!  Both minis will be trained to drive this winter!

December 13, 2011  Congratulations to everyone who attended the Buckeye Miniature Horse Club annual banquet last weekend!

Johnathan and Ty Woodward posing with the awards!

JD Woodward was named youth high point 8 and under with his miniature horse 'Tucker'  He received a lovely trophy, embroidered halter bag, and engraved leather halter for Tucker

Ty Woodward was named 'Entertainer of the Year!' :)

November 14, 2011  The All Ohio Horse Show Organization held their year end awards banquet this past weekend.  It was a great time, and a well run, well attended event.  Our farm was recognized for several year end awards

Johnathan and Tucker were (of course) our highlight of the evening.  They came away with 3rd place overall in small fry showmanship 8 and under, and then 4th place in the OPEN miniature horse pleasure driving 34 and under.  They competed and placed in the OPEN driving pleasure against all the adults!  Congratulations JD and Tucker!

November 7, 2011.  In just ten days, we went from announcing our show season was over, to perhaps not quite yet.  We have found a winter show series that we may be attending with the training horses, and some young riders.  We will keep this site updated with more information!  I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who has called, emailed, or sent cards sending condolences on the passing of our beloved stallion, A Rock.  We do have two of our own mares bred to him for 2012, along with two other mares as well.  We have had much concern from people as to if we are getting out of the Haflinger breed.  After 35 years of the family being involved with Haflingers, the answer is no, we are not getting out of the breed.  We will continue to train and show Haflinger Horses, however we will not be standing any stallions for 2012.

October 27, 2011  Our show season for 2011 is officially over.  We ended our season by prepping and showing 2 weanling fillies for the herd dispersal sale for Golden Gait Haflinger Farm, Dr. Kevin Edwards.  We also took the stallion, Next Level GHJ to the auction for him along with his fillies.  It is always sad to see a breeder get out of the Haflinger breed, this farm will be greatly missed.  The two fillies showed well in the American Haflinger Registry Futurity, placing 2nd and 4th in classes out of 11 horses.

We now welcome the four year old ST line stallion Stelaka PHHF.  He was part of Golden Gait Haflinger Farm herd dispersal, and was purchased by Hendershot Haflingers, Chuck Hendershot of New York.  We brought him home from the sale with us last week.  'Steel' as he will be called in the barn, has settled in quickly, and is quite a calm, and lovely boy.  A high silver rating with 79 points, and standing 60 inches tall (15 hands) Steel has brought new interest to me personally after the passing our stallion A Rock.   He will be in training with us for the remainder of the year both under saddle and driving, and will be on our 2012 show string.  Please check back for more information on this exciting young stallion!

Other News; Congratulations to Kate Preston!  Kate has worked for us for the past three years.  She has accepted a position with Walt Disney World Resort in Florida from Feb 2012-Aug 2012.  While she will be missing foaling season, and most of show season, she has promised to come back and finish college here in Ohio!  We wish Kate the best of luck, we are going to have an impossible time trying to find someone to fill her boots!

October 7, 2011  It is with the heaviest of hearts that I announce the passing of my beloved stallion, A Rock.  He left us on August 5th, 2011, as I was unable to save him.  I am still not able to talk about his passing, and I apologize to all of my clients, friends, and Haflinger owners and lovers whom I have not told.  Until now, only family knew of his passing, so no one is to feel neglected or left out for not being told.

To all who had the pleasure to see him, you know what a loss this is to the Haflinger world.  To those who have a son or daughter from him, go to the barn and give them a hug and know that you have something special.  There will never be another who I will have the connection as I did with him, he truly was one of a kind.  Please remember him.

The Grandest Foal

I'll lend you for a little while
My grandest foal, God said.
For you to love while he's alive
And mourn for when he's dead.

It may be one or twenty years,
Or days or months, you see.
But will you, till I take him back
Take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you,
And should his stay be brief
You'll have his treasured memories
As solace for your grief.

I can't promise you how long he'll stay,
Since all from earth return.
But there are lessons taught on earth
That I want this foal to learn.

I've looked the wide world over,
In my search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes
With trust, I've chosen you.

Now will you give him all your love?
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come
To take him back again?

I know you'll give him tenderness
And love will bloom each day.
And for the happiness you've known
You will forever grateful stay.

But should I come and call for him
Much sooner than you planned,
You'll brave the bitter grief that comes
and know you'll understand......

Left- A Rock at the Ohio Equine Affaire  Right- A Rock and I showing at the AHR National Show in reining

I was never so proud of A Rock and I as when we competed at the National Show in Hunter over Fences classes.  My western pleasure horse became the perfect partner with me in our over fences classes and we worked for a year on jumping.  Of all the championships I have ever won on any horse, my second place ribbon in our class still means more to me than any championship or award because we did the absolute best we could do, he gave me his entire heart, trust, and confidence, and he carried me through the course with all the lead changes and correct take off spots with the grace and athleticism only A Rock could bring to the ring.  We were completely together and as one.

My true all around performance horse. This is what I hope all our Haflingers can achieve, the heart, ambition, trainability, talent, trust, and love with just enough orneriness' to keep it interesting.
