Shows attended Central Ohio Haflinger Show, Buckeye Haflinger Show, Buckeye Miniature Horse Club Spring and Fall Show, Central Ohio Horse Association Show, All-Breed Pleasure Driving Show As we welcomed our second child this fall, our show season was much shorter, as we were not able to attend Nationals, or Futurity in 2010. May 15th, Show with the Buckeye Miniature Horse Club, Mini and Pony Show, Newark Ohio We had such a nice time at this show. We took four horses, two mini's and two Haflingers and a lot of people! Chelsie Hicks, our coming intern for the summer from Ohio State showed our two year old filly Marquis MJW in halter and showmanship, she also got her feet wet in her first driving class with Tucker! Mom Gwen Wells drove Misty in Misty's first driving class ever, and they did great as well. We also had Liz Porteus, age 10 who was in a variety of halter, showmanship, and driving classes with Tucker and Misty, and Erin Wilson age 8 used several Mini's also in halter and showmanship. Our youngest youth, Johnathan Woodward age 4, showed his mini Tucker, in halter and showmanship classes throughout the day. Mike Woodward brought out our two year old stallion, Awesome Gold MMH for his driving debut and also showed in halter. Jacque Woodward was the official groom and runner for the entire group, although she did get to show Tucker to a second place finish in in-hand jumping, and Awesome Gold did his first ever in hand obstacle course! This was just a very nice, calm, quiet show for our horses and young people to go out and enjoy themselves. The judge was wonderful with all the new first timers, both horses and people, and a potluck dinner was enjoyed by all. There was a variety of classes, over 70 for mini's through ponies 58 inches and under. The weather was beautiful and a great time was had by all!
Jan 23rd, First Show, Ohio Winter Arena Driving Series, Windy Knoll Farm, Sullivan, Ohio This was a great first show of the year! We headed to the ADT (Arena Drive Trial) with Mike Woodward driving Michigan Mohawk for the training pony division, and Tucker, a miniature horse who was entered in Youth with Johnathan, and Green as Grass with Gwen Wells (aka Jacque's mom). Jacque Woodward was official 'groom' and navigator for the event. :) The facility is top notch, the people were wonderful, the show was 'sold out' as exhibitors claimed each spot to showcase their horses. The first in a three series event, an Arena Drive Trial (ADT) is three separate phases, driven dressage, cones, and then hazards. All scores are tallied and then final placings are given. This was a first time driving event for Johnathan, age four, and a first time ADT for Gwen. Mike started out the day driving Mohawk, a registered Haflinger gelding who has had a previous life as an exceptional draft hitch horse, and the past 1 1/2 years has been a pasture buddy. With Mandolyn RVRW out for the year as she is due to foal in March, and the next prospect in line, Cocoa Chanel, getting kicked in the jaw and suffering an abscess, there were no horses old enough to use. So, brother in law said to use Mohawk, which Mike has enjoyed many draft wins with. However, a draft hitch horse goes around a ring, quickly, high stepping, head up, and spooks at about anything. In order to get ready for the summer, CDE's Mike wanted to start Mohawk now and this event was the perfect place. With lots of new groundwork exercises, Mohawk is being retrained to rethink, and work differently. They made it through all three phases quite nicely for the three weeks training they had working together in this new avenue (horse, driver, and carriage were all in one piece at the end of all three phases, and we were quite impressed. However, the big story goes to Johnathan and Gwen. Johnathan finished a great first time dressage round, and his cones round was nice. Since he is four, recognizing the numbers to go through got a bit tricky past 11, and then he thought it was a lot more fun to try to get Tucker to hit the cone, to watch the ball fall off! :) But, again, he made it through, and got a great applause, and finished with a 4th place finish in the youth division (out of 4) :). Gwen also came home quite happy, earning a 3rd place finish out of 6 in the VSE class (Very Small Equine) and then a 2 place finish in the Green as Grass division. After a horrific horse driving wreck four years ago, we are thrilled that mom is driving again, even if it is a 'miniature' version! Jacque enjoyed being the groom and navigator, however it is hard to get ready only 1 1/2 horses, instead of 8-10 at a time! There was a lot of down time in the event, but happily, in the dressage phase of presentation, all three showmen pulled out perfect 10's on their attire, harness cleanliness and fit etc, so the extra time of elbow grease paid off!
